‘If I Fits I Sits’: 15 Reasons Our Cats Can’t Live Without Boxes

It is a well known fact that cats love a box to squeeze into. Some have posited that it might be because they feel self conscious because of their fur and want to show us hoomans how slim and trim they actually are. But those are nothing more than baseless opinions, what we have fur you today are some straight up feline facts from hoomans who have actually figured out why cats love sitting in boxes so darn much.

Cats squeezing themselves into boxes, or generally enjoying a good box is a surprisingly common topic on Reddit's r/cats subreddit. Pawrents fawn over how cute the habit is, how when and where their cat kids curl up in their boxes and of course as this list aims to answer, why in fact do our feline friends so very much enjoy the confines of a cardboard box? After all, what could they see in this flimsy, single use piece of overgrown paper? Maybe us hoomans are missing something?

And as it happens, we hoomans have indeed missed a whole heap of stuff when it comes to cats and their cardboard boxes. Now first off the facts we have found apply to all boxes not only cardboard, but cardboard is a central figure considering how readily available our online order boxes have become. Second, we want to get the obvious out of the way, a box is a safe space for a feline, after all, they too are prey in certain situations and need a place to feel safe, secure and hidden from their predators. The rest of the rather interesting reasons we will leave for you to discover. Just be warned that the reasons are that good that you yourself might end up in a box by the end of it.

  • Wow, we have to say we had never thought that the humble cardboard box could have such a significant impact upon feline kind. It is almost as though we hoomans decided to work on synthesizing the purrfect combination of materials to completely care for the needs of a cat. Scientists must have worked tirelessly, toiling day and night to make sure that cats could enjoy the safety, smell the smells and of course enjoy some quiet time away from the ruckus of us hoomans. Tis just a shame that no such material exists for hooman kind, now that would be one heck of a trend.

    hellwoo Research studies found that the smell of cardboard reduces stress in cats. Cats really don't deal well with stress so they are drawn to cardboard to help them feel calm and more secure.

    [deleted] It's like how you feel when wrapped up in a blanket! Cats will lay with their backs shoved up to the wall/corner because they know there's a wall there so nothing can creep up behind them so there's only a 180 degree FoV to be weary of instead of 360. That's my understanding, anyway.

    CrotchWolf In nature cats are hardwired to look for small enclosed spaces for comfort and safety from larger predators. Domestic house cats mimic this by looking for spaces that fill that criteria such as boxes or under the bed.

  • Well, if our cat childrens’ need to hangout in cardboard comes from nature then it is all the more surprising that the material even exists. In nature there really is not anything quite like cardboard. Sure you might argue that a pile of leaves and some dirt might make a suitable structure. But the reality is that in some way, somehow, we hoomans have created the be all and end all feline material. Maybe that is the true reason that cats actually like hoomans. Maybe its not about the food at all, it could even be that they think our food is disgusting, but they will stomach it for their precious cardboard time.

    radrun84 In their little cat brains they see a box & think "One way in one way out" = safety. The funny thing is, that this is so ingrained in their genetics, that tmif you tape a square to the floor, Thwy will naturally choose that square as their spit & go sit/lay in it! Its hilarious.
